Torres, McKinstry Stay Hot as Tigers Edge Padres 6–4: Detroit Secures Fourth Win in Five Games

April 22, 2025

DETROIT, April 21, 2025 —  The Detroit Tigers continued their surge with a 6–4 win over the San Diego Padres on Monday night at Comerica Park, notching their fourth victory in their last five contests. Behind three-hit performances from Gleyber Torres and Zach McKinstry, the Tigers built an early lead and leaned on their bullpen to shut the door late — a formula that’s fast becoming their winning blueprint in this young season.

Tigers Come Out Swinging

Detroit wasted no time grabbing control of the game. After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Tigers answered immediately. Gleyber Torres, hitting leadoff, sparked the rally with a line-drive single. McKinstry followed with a booming RBI triple to deep right-center, and Colt Keith singled him home to give the Tigers a 2–1 lead.

The next two innings followed the same rhythm. In the second, Javier Báez was plunked by a pitch, advanced on a walk, and came around to score on a base hit from Tomas Nido. Riley Greene chipped in with an RBI single as Detroit extended its cushion to 4–1.

By the third inning, the Tigers had broken the game open. With the bases loaded, Torres punched a clutch two-run single into center, scoring Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. That made it 6–2, and it turned out to be all the run support Detroit would need.

“We’re seeing the ball really well right now,” said Torres, who has notched eight hits in his last four games. “It’s fun when the whole lineup is contributing — there’s a lot of energy in the dugout.”

McKinstry Making a Statement

Zach McKinstry, who also went 3-for-4, has quietly emerged as a spark plug at the top of the order. Monday marked his second three-hit game this season, and he’s batting .391 over his last six games.

“He’s been locked in,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said postgame. “Zach gives us a lot of flexibility defensively, but his bat has been the difference-maker lately. He’s keeping innings alive and getting big hits when we need them.”

McKinstry’s triple in the first inning was his third extra-base hit of the season. He also made a pair of strong defensive plays at second base, including a diving stop in the sixth that saved a run.

Starter Keider Montero worked through 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out three. While he didn’t factor into the decision, his ability to limit further damage in high-leverage moments kept Detroit in front.

Right-hander Brenan Hanifee (1–0) came on in relief and was lights-out across two scoreless innings. Tyler Holton and Shelby Miller bridged the seventh and eighth before Will Vest closed the door in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Vest, who’s taken over closing duties with Alex Lange on the injured list, struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. on a filthy slider to seal the win.

“That’s a guy who’s not afraid of the moment,” Hinch said of Vest. “That last at-bat, bases empty or not, that’s a former MVP candidate you’re staring down. He got him with his best pitch.”

Padres Fall Behind Early, Can’t Recover

San Diego starter Randy Vásquez (1–2) struggled through just two-plus innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks. The Tigers teed off on his fastball early, consistently finding gaps and forcing Padres manager Mike Shildt to go to his bullpen before the third inning ended.

San Diego Padres

Offensively, the Padres showed flashes of life. Gavin Sheets connected on a solo homer in the fifth, and Oscar Gonzalez drove in a run with a single in the third. But the damage was limited, and San Diego went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Momentum Building in Motor City

With this win, the Tigers improved to 12–9 and have now won the opening game in seven consecutive series to start the season — a franchise record. They’re also 6–3 at home, finding ways to win with a mix of young talent and veteran stability.

“We’re growing, man,” said McKinstry. “The chemistry is real. Guys are picking each other up. The whole room believes we’re building something.”

Looking ahead, Detroit will try to clinch the series on Tuesday night when Jack Flaherty takes the mound against Nick Pivetta. The Padres, now 10–11, will be looking to even the series and avoid sliding below .500.
